LEGAL
Laws of contempt: In the media you produce you can't have a strict agenda aimed to create prejudice and change the public's mind on a person/group in a court case that is not released as a fact. It is illegal to report on a current legal court case in my magazine. As part of 'Freedom of Information' I can access and report on the facts but can not give my opinion. You also cannot post anything that is too sensationalist about a criminal case. This information cannot also be posted online.
In my business magazine i have to make sure not to push a specific political agenda or report on any current court trails with the intent to change the public's mind on the issue, this will be simple as the magazine concept has nothing to do with current real world issues, only an update of what is happening in the world of Sheffield business.
Libel Law: Illegal to publish defamatory content about a person or publish untrue information. It is written.
I am going to adhere to this law in my special feature article of The Sheffield Chamber Of Commerce by making sure that my article only mentions information about the chamber that I have confirmed with them to be true. I will also make sure in my introduction and conclusion that I don't write anything about any members of The Chamber specifically, this means I won't be writing any untrue information about them and publishing it to the public. However, this law isn't likely to affect me as I will be using an interview as my primary content for the article. This means that the information I'm writing about The Chamber is coming from them directly, meaning all information will be true as they are the ones telling us (the reader) about it.
Copyright: Ensures that intellectual property is protected from being plagiarised without permission from the original creator.
I will be taking my own photos of people/locations with permission gained, meaning i own them, therefore adhering to the copyright laws and not falling into risk of getting sued as i am not using another studios/companies/ individuals content without permission. I will not be using photos taken by anyone else.
Obscene publications Act: Obscene; something which is not acceptable to be seen for the general population- Nudity, Pornography, Graphic Violence, Drug abuse. Content can't coherse or encourage these acts. It is illegal to publish content that may negatively influence readers. Examples of this are performance enhancing drugs in gym media.
My audience is 25-40, primarily male and in the B Group with a high disposable income. My magazine shouldn't encourage overworking yourself or others to further improve status. I will make sure my articles don't tell the audience to prioritise work over the well being of yourself and others but instead encouraging healthy ways to take breaks.
ETHICAL
Ethical issues are more to do with morals and values.
Being unethical when creating media products may not cause you to face legal trouble but may cause the peoples/audiences opinions of your product to decrease and reduce sales.
Ethical issues i have to be aware of are:
- Whether the content i'm including in my product is age appropriate
- How my product is representing certain groups or causing harm to certain groups
- Whether my product mistreats animals
- My product not having an editorial bias
- Whether my product uses accurate/factual information.
One primary ethical issue I want to combat in the production of my business magazine is the gender bias that men are the predominant gender that run the industry and that men are the ones in positions of power. To tackle this issue, for my special feature article I will be interviewing a powerful female role model within the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, creating an ideal self and showing that the business genre is no longer run by men and that women are just as capable to become successful in the business world. This also means that I may include the interviewee as part of my main cover image, using techniques such as a low angle to create the ideal self imagery.
